There are many reasons to start on the path to credit repair. The biggest reason is that credit affects you every day. It affects the interest rates you pay on credit cards and loans, including mortgages, and can result in higher security deposits for rentals. It can also affect what you pay for insurance rates and what credit limits you qualify for. Good credit can also mean financial freedom where you don’t have to depend on cosigners to help you make purchases and secure loans.

When Do Negative Credit Report Items Expire?

Your reports contain basic details about you—your name, birth date, address, etc. It’s important to review this information to make sure it’s accurate. It’s okay if your past addresses are listed. Reports also show any financial legal issues you have, such as a bankruptcy, liens, judgments or wage garnishment. If one of these issues is bringing your credit scores down, take comfort in knowing these negative items eventually age off your reports. Beyond that is creditor information, which makes up most of your reports. This includes different accounts you have—loans, credit cards, etc. —and their status (open/closed, in collection), balances, credit limits and payment details. It can also include dates of missed payments or late payments and when the accounts were sent to collections.

There are no overnight fixes when it comes to your credit, and repair is no exception. Depending on the type, and number, of items on your report you wish to dispute, repair can take anywhere from six weeks to more than a year. No credit repair agency can give you a “30-day guarantee” to solve all of your problems — not only is it unlikely, it’s illegal.

Step 1: tell the credit reporting company, in writing, what information you think is inaccurate. Use our sample letter to help write your own. Include copies (not originals) of any documents that support your position. In addition to including your complete name and address, your letter should identify each item in your report that you dispute; state the facts and the reasons you dispute the information, and ask that it be removed or corrected. You may want to enclose a copy of your report, and circle the items in question. Send your letter by certified mail, “return receipt requested,” so you can document that the credit reporting company got it. Keep copies of your dispute letter and enclosures.

How Long Does Credit Repair Take?

Like most people i was hesitant at first but i can't argue with the results. This book was a tremendous help in starting to repair my credit. I had a derogatory mark on my report that i had already planned on paying $500 to have the account “paid in full” but would still show up on my report as a negative. Before i sent my payment i purchased the book, found my situation, mailed the appropriate letter, and a month later the negative mark was removed from my credit report and stayed off without me having to pay anything. I saved $500 dollars! that alone was worth me getting this book. I still have a long way to go but i look forward to seeing what else i cant do.

If you have a poor credit history or a lack of credit history, a secured credit card may help you repair your credit and raise your credit scores. These require a deposit that generally serves as your credit limit. If you don’t pay your bills, the card issuer can withdraw the deposit. If you open one of these cards, it’s important to make on-time payments and keep an eye on your credit utilization. Depending on your situation, a secured credit card can help you start fixing your credit in as little as six months. However, it may take longer to see a marked improvement in some cases. If your credit history is limited and you have no credit, then a secured card may be your best route, because you have no negative information to start with.

How long it takes to repair your credit depends on your goals, your situation, your strategy and numerous other factors. Everyone has a unique situation, so the length of time that it takes to repair their credit varies greatly. The credit bureaus have to respond to your credit report disputes within 30 days. In some cases, they get up to 45 days. Removing negative items on your credit report is only the first step. It’s also important to have positive accounts on your credit report. This may require getting a credit card and making your payments on time to establish some credit history.

How Soon Can You Expect a Late Payment to Show on Your Credit Report?

If you don’t go bankrupt, the longest time that most negative information is allowed to stay on your credit report is 6 – 7 years, depending on which province you live in. For bankruptcies, it’s 6 – 7 years after you’ve been discharged and judgements can be renewed for up to 10 years, if someone has obtained a judgement against you. For example, if you had a string of late payments on a credit card, but then you began to make your payments on time and continued paying on time for six years, then after 6/7 years, all record of those late payments should be erased from your credit report. As far as anyone is concerned who reads your credit report, those late payments never happened.

Having negative but incorrect information removed (whether self-initiated or by using a credit repair company) from your credit report can result in a huge scoring improvement. For example, if one wrongful late payment is showing up, it could be lowering your fico score 90- to 110-points. Rectify it and your score will be back up to where it should be. An excellent score is in the mid 700s and above (both fico and vantagescore range from 300 to 850). This graph shows the credit score ranges for fico and vantagescore, the two main scoring models.

One of the biggest contributors to credit damage is inconsistent payment history. Missing a single payment on a credit card or loan won’t make or break you but falling behind and making multiple late payments can have a serious impact on your score. A poor payment history is extremely detrimental to your credit score; it’s the most common cause of decrease. Lenders want to know that you’re a good credit risk – that is, if they loan you money, you’ll pay it back. If you have no pay or slow pay history on your credit report, they believe they’ll lose money if they loan to you. The length of your credit history also has a major impact. The longer you can show that you’ve been a responsible borrower, the better.
